NK Moving Closer to a Market Economy?

Hello again,

This is another article from the same newspaper that describes changes in the North Korean economy, as the government has established "markets in every corner of the financially-strapped state and extend business hours late into the evening."

It is an intersting read because North Korea is described differently from the reading, North Korea Through the Looking Glass; indeed, a lot has changed.

I get the feeling this is just propaganda being released to the world to show North Korea as successful, not oppressive, etc. If they do have these free market areas I'm sure they are regulated or very closely watched. Even if these are true signs of econmic freedom the government is beginning to allow the people, it will not be enough to turn the economy around unless it becomes rapidly widespread.
