More on The Hole

Hello everyone,

Contrary to Chris and Lauren's articles, this article from a Korean newspaper is stating that it is highly likely that it was a South Korean civilian defecting North!

This is what the Joint Chiefs of Staff Head of Operations Brig. General HWANG Jung Seon of the DPRK said in a press conference:

Considering how the holes in the fence were square-shaped and were opened South to North and footprints and handprints at the scene were imprinted from the South to the North, there were no particular signs related to an infiltration attempt, and it is judged that an unknown individual went to the North.
Interesting contradiction from both sides. I am excited to see how this will play out.

I think it is interesting that someone discovers a hole in the fence and suddenly the airwaves are filled with warnings of invasion, guerilla action, and defections. Not that any of these explanations are out of the picture, but threatening doomsday predictions blast off pretty quickly when something like this is discovered. It would be interesting to find out if this is anything new or not.

As the guy who translated the piece linked above, I assure you the paper is South Korean -- my office is just across the street from Seoul City Hall. In fact, the paper is generally regarded as the voice of the S. Korean right and holds N. Korea is rather poor regard, a feeling that is very much reciprocated by Pyongyang.

How do they know it was a South Korean civilian? Couldn't it just as possibly be a couple of South Korean spies or commandos?
